ABOUT US Teaching Staff
It is a requirement at Sunshine Nursery School that only trained staff with Early Childhood experience and knowledge teach our children. Knowledge, professionalism, and enthusiasm play a big role in our school. Each teacher also has an up-to-date child care first aid course certificate given by the Canadian Red Cross or St. Johns Ambulance. This is renewed every 3 years. It is also a requirement that all staff be cleared by the RCMP.
Each class is staffed by a qualified teacher and two certified teacher assistants to maintain a maximum ratio of six children per staff member.
Our teachers and teachers' aides are:
Kristin Harnett – Teacher
"I graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Regina, majoring in Early Childhood Education, a specialty in prekindergarten to grade three. I also have the Child Development Supervisor Certificate in accordance with the Child Care Licensing Regulation.
During my education experience, I was able to teach in a grade one classroom in rural Saskatchewan, a grade 3/4 split and a prekindergarten class in Regina. I was responsible for 20-24 children, planning lessons, providing assessment and managing the classroom.
Before obtaining my degree, working with children was a voluntary interest of mine. I was also a program instructor for a City of Regina summer recreational program, as well as a child-care provider for children ages three and four in a nursery.
I started teaching at Sunshine Nursery School in September, 2003.
I feel that every child is unique and brings something special to the classroom. Every day is an adventure for me, as I never know what to expect as the day unfolds. I love children and when they are happy I am pleased and the happiness that I see in them is what makes teaching so rewarding."
Laura Angus – Teacher Assistant
"After getting so much pleasure and enjoyment in bringing up my four children, I decided to take the pathway into childcare. I attended relevant college courses and obtained qualifications including a Level 1 Child Care Certificate.
I have always enjoyed being in the company of young children, volunteering in various classrooms, and taking part on numerous field trips. I feel very privileged to be a part of Sunshine Nursery School."
Christine Belhumeur – Teacher Assistant
"I first developed my passion for working with children through the many years I spent volunteering in my three children's school classrooms. I obtained my level II Childcare Worker Certificate and have seven years experience working in an early childhood setting.
I believe that the early years in a child's education build the foundation of life long learning. I love being a part of helping a child develop self confidence, great social skills and a feeling of belonging in the school setting."
Shelli Perry – Teacher Assistant
I am thrilled to be joining the fantastic teaching team at Sunshine Nursery School. I have had the pleasure of being a Stay-at-Home-Mom for my 2 children, whom also attended Sunshine Nursery School, for 4 years, where I saw first hand how amazing the staff and students are.
During my time at home I have spent countless hours volunteering in schools and various sports programs. I love working with children as I find their joy for learning so rewarding.
I have completed 2 years working towards a Bachelor of Education, including 2 full years of work experience in varying ages from Early Childhood Services to grade 12.
Heather MacKay – Teacher Assistant
"With my recent Child Development Assistant Certification completed, I feel so grateful to be the newest member of Sunshine Nursery School staff. I love working with children and find so much joy in watching and contributing in their development as well as creating a special bond with each child. I love the time that I get to spend with the children every week and seeing them grow and learn is so rewarding. Although I am new to this field, I have spent many years volunteering with children in different capacities with both of my daughters' schools and sports activities."
